Syfy - designing a spaceship

I struggled with this a lot - I've never really designed anything mechanical before. I read this document:

which talks about space ship design and tried to gather a few pointers from this.

I did some pretty silly looking designs at first and then stuck with this weird little one that is a lot simpler, but I wasn't really happy with it anyway.

I tried to re-draw the design in Photoshop, thinking this would be the drawing I feature in my animated banners, but I felt like it was terrible and wasn't worth carrying on with since I'm just no good at mechanical design, and am thinking about omitting the spaceship altogether and doing a different idea or simplifying the banners a bit
